The main breeding targets for a Spring Calving herd are:
- 90% of cows submitted for service in the first 3 weeks of breeding
- A six-week in-calf rate of 90%
- An empty rate of less than 10% after 12 weeks of breeding
These figures are based on research carried out by Teagasc and underpin profitability on Irish dairy farms.
In order to reach these targets a combination of management in terms of cow nutrition, genetics and heat detection is required.
