The Moocall Calving Sensor is a tail mounted motion sensor that measures specific tail movements.
When a cow gets a contraction her tail moves in a specific way and that’s the data our device can measure. Our calving sensor gathers around 600 pieces of data every second, the algorithm then filters this and when it reaches a certain threshold the first high activity alert is triggered.
If the movements continue, you will get a second high activity alert. These alerts come in the form of SMS messages, notifications on your Breedmanager app and emails.

What are Moocall customers are saying
Moocall working very well, as my farm is 40 miles away from where i live, moocall has saved me time and of course travel. it alerted me when the cow was 2 hours and 1 hour from calfing. I would highly reccommend this product.
Hi getting too old for multiple overnight trips checking cows. Moocall has worked 100% in advance warning. Very pleased, money well spent!
FAQ
Turning on the calving sensor doesn't trigger an SMS or app alert. However, you can see a record of it being switched on in the Moocall App, or on the Dashboard.
These are the messages your calving sensor will send out:
With the charge cap securely closed the device is water-resistant, however it is vital that no water gets into the electronics of the device.
We recommend using a damp cloth or a brush to clean your Moocall. You can remove the inside rubber and wash that as needed.
DO NOT SUBMERGE YOUR MOOCALL IN WATER
When the charge cap is securely closed, the Moocall Calving Sensor is water resistant.
However, it is important to remember that much like your smart phone, this unit is an electronic device. It is vital that no water gets into the electronics of the device.
So while it will be alright in the rain, do NOT submerge the device underwater while cleaning it, etc.
We recommend using a damp cloth or a brush to clean your Moocall. You can remove the inside rubber and wash that as needed.
When a cow gets a contraction her tail will behave in a specific way. The algorithm detects this specific tail movement while being able to filter out any normal tail movement. The length and intensity of these contractions are measured.
Approximately 600 pieces of data are gathered every second. Once they satisfy the algorithm and reach a certain threshold the first high activity alert is triggered.
If they continue then the second high activity alert is sent. These alerts come in the form of SMS , email and mobile app notification. We try to detect the shift from mid to late labour so usually you will get one hours notice.
However, we are dealing with nature and not all labours are the same so sometimes you will get less notice (fast labour) usually seen in older cows or experienced easy calving dairy bred cows.
Other times you will get lots of advance warning (difficult labour, complications, cow gives up labour etc) usually seen in situations where a leg may be stuck or the calf is presenting backwards.
We normally recommend one sensor for a herd size of 30-40 cows. This will be dependent on your calving pattern (A 50 cow herd calving year-round differs greatly to one calving over 12 weeks!) and how you plan on managing your sensor.
For example a lot of our farmers operating a very tight calving spread would find the Moocall most useful at the beginning and end of calving once numbers have slackened off. In this situation a farmer may only need 1 or 2 sensors.
If managed effectively the sensor can pick up circa 6 calvings per week as it can be moved straight on to the next cow due to calve. The long battery life of 30 plus days helps to facilitate this.
If you would like further advice on the correct number of units for your particular farm please give our team a call.
For what we call a standard calving you will receive 2 high activity warnings an hour apart approx 1.5 hours before the birth.
In some cases a farmer can receive false alerts and the most common reasons for these are as follows:
Over tightening.
Being on the tail for longer than 4 days without a break.
Being too low down on the tail.
Other reasons why you may receive a false alarm:
Straw bedded shed getting new straw and cow with more activity than normal.
Another cow calving beside the cow with the sensor fitted.
Lice - the cow is consistently scratching.
Mastitis - in a severe case of infection.
